TeachMeet Student Edition is the first TeachMeet specifically designed for student teachers and teachers in their probationary year. It’s a self-organising “unconference” which was proposed by David Muir at Strathclyde University.

  • If you are happy to share ideas with other teachers; TeachMeet is for you.
  • If you want to hear colleagues inspire you with new ideas; TeachMeet is for you.
  • If you want to meet fellow student teachers to chat and make new friends; TeachMeet is for you.

Tag blog posts, Tweets, phots etc. with tmse09. This way we can track and collate all lean and tone things related to TeachMeet SE.

When and where?

Tuesday 9th June 2009 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a meal afterwards for those who are interested at Mud Run (see TeachEat below).

Venue now confirmed as Room MCC3 in the McCance Building, 16 Richmond Street, Glasgow, G1 1XQ. See How to get on Google, Google Map (and street view) or fly to the location in Google Earth.

More about the venue: A lecture theatre was booked but since we are not allowed food and drink in the lecture theatre, I booked the conservatory outside too. Having visited the space, it looks like it might be better to run the whole event in the conservatory! (See venue photos page.) This means some extra equipment will be necessary, so I have started a list in the Bringalongers section below. Please help if you can.

What is TeachMeet?

Learn something new, be amazed, amused and enthused. This is an informal gathering of those curious about technologies. Anyone can share cool ideas they have or great ideas they've trialled in their classrooms.

What can you do?

You can come along to linger, loiter, contribute, chat, meet new people, or 'give a seven minute talk' or a 'two minute nano presentation'.

Rules for the talk:

  • It's only seven minutes long
  • Your setup is part of the seven minutes
  • Tell us about something you have done or something you saw while teaching

To get involved in any of the TeachMeets on this wiki you will need to create an account with PBworks, after that anyone can edit the pages, which means you can sign up for anything here.

Flashmeeting

For those who can't make it in person, we are hosting a flashmeeting. Click here to join (17:40 - 20:40). Limited to 25 attendees, so please add your name below to indicate if you plan to attend via flashmeeting.  For those unfamiliar with the Flashmeeting environment, there is a quick introduction available here.

  1. Sinclair Mackenzie (twitter: @mrmackenzie / web: fizzics) - if allowed?
  2. Adam Stevens (@ahstevens) - would love to attend in person, but probably won't make it.
  3. Russell Dyas (@russdev)

TeachEat

If we end up in the Graham Hills Building, there are loads of good places to eat nearby in the Merchant City.  Suggestions for places to eat:

  • Khublai Khan - Mongolian Barbeque Restaurant. A previous TeachMeet ate here. Good relaxed atmosphere but perhaps not ideal for vegitarians.
  • Cafe India - An Indian restaurant (surprisingly enough!). Went there with a group of students last year and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Cast your vote now to help choose the venue.

Update: The votes are in and three-quarters of those who voted went for Khublai Khan. Table(s) now booked. They have to close the bar-b-que at 10:30 on weekdays so they suggested that we get there ASAP! :-)

Sponsors

We are pleased to announce that ATL, the education union, are supprting TeachMeet Student Edition and will be sponsoring the refreshments and nibbles that will be available at the TeachMeet.

Other suggestions for sponsors gratefully accepted.

Spent some time this evening trying to sort out some kind of sponsorship for the event, including unions, and a few private companies. It would be a massive help to me in this if people who know could help fill in this spreadsheet of expenses for the event, that way we can balance those against any potential donations and keep everything above board. The spreadsheet is here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=rvHaEx6LcGDwL6AGT8epzvw&hl=en_GB# (google account required)

Bringeralongers

Without people to help out a teachmeet cannot happen, if you can provide something like a projector, a laptop, some beers, money, or simply be willing to help move tables and chairs around then please let us know.

There are a few things we need, please add your name beside the request if you can bring any of these:

  1. One, possibly two, data projectors - Alan Yeoman (Only one projector)  Jaye Richards - one projector
  2. Two, possibly three, projector screens - Alan Yeoman (one screen)
  3. Extension leads (and gaffer tape to tape them down!) Alan Yeoman - couple of extensions and a rol of tape
  4. A sound system? (no amplification in the conservatory but probably OK if we all use "teacher voices") Alan Yeoman - can bring speakers for laptop but no mics.  --might be able to get a PA PA mics, stands, speakers etc. Will see what I can do and report back [John Daly] (School need the Coomber tomorrow, and I've got no way to get it back so no can do I'm afraid - Iain Hallahan)
  5. Someone to look after the flashmeeting laptop Iain Hallahan - I'll look after the FM laptop. Seems only fair - I've been on the other end often enough.....
  6. Signage - A4 posters with logo and arrows: versions with left, right, up, diagonal up left and diagonal up right (perhaps five of each). Also signs for Gents and Ladies toilets with arrows again (perhaps three of each). --Got a guy working on it; might need some help getting them printed off though [John Daly]
  7. Make better posters to advertise TeachMeet Student Edition! A3 version: tmse90A3.doc and A4 version: tmse90A4.doc Can someone please make better versions! [This is a quickly rehashed version of something poor I made for TeachMeetBorders, if you like it I have the PSD file]
  8. ... more will be added here as I think about it. :-)

Twitter

If Twitter users amongst the sign-ups to this page could add their usernames below? There will be a Twitter backchannel on the night but people might like to monitor Twitter activity before, during and after the event. If we use the #tmse09 hashtag whenever we Tweet about this TeachMeet, it will make it easier to track what's going on. See what people are saying on Twitter about #TMSE09 right now by clicking here
