Teachmeet SLF 2009
Scottish Learning Festival Edition

What is TeachMeet?
Teachmeet returns to the Scottish Learning Festival for the 4th Year!
Learn something new, be amazed, amused and enthused. This is an informal gathering of those curious about teaching and technology. Anyone can share great ideas they've trialled in their classrooms, ask important questions or simply sign up to take part in learning conversations.
Teachmeet SLF is a fringe event of the Scottish Learning Festival.

What can you do?
You can come along to chat, meet new people, or give a seven minute talk, a two minute nano presentation or lead a conversation.
As with all Teachmeets, we are dependant on our sponsors for a venue, refreshments, wifi, equipment and other costs.
Presentation Rules
What are the rules for this year's Teachmeet SLF? Do we want to maintain the strict no powerpoint rule (with the standard Lessig style exception)? How do we feel about Prezi etc.?
You can use whatever presentation format you want including PowerPoint, keynote, prezi, slide rocket, 280 slides, you could just talk, show something from the web, hold up a poster or you could sing a song!
The important thing is that you get your message across and you will only get one minute set up time.
Be prepared for technical difficulties and be ready to wing it on the night! That’s what makes Teachmeet exciting!

Learning conversations
At recent TeachMeets, not everybody who wished to present has been able to present. Similary, not everybody wishes to perform. So... instead of doing a presentation, would you like to lead a conversation on a topic that's currently close to your heart? Perhaps it's an area where you have more questions than answers?
We will try to make space in the night for these learning conversations to take place.
Sign up below if you'd like to lead a conversation and tell us what it will be about.
I think that as this is likely to be quite a big teachmeet the learning conversations idea would be great! Suggestions anyone...
- introductions to new Tech in the classroom - maybe a wee tutorial or discussion about setting up and using blogs/wikis (or something similar) for new teachers...?
- future models of assessment - Gordon Brown
- Can Glow drive pedagogical change? - Bob Hill - twitter
- Who owns the curriculum? - Bill Boyd - twitter
- Report
-
We were supposed to talk about Glow changing the pedagogy. This topic seemed a great idea at 11:00 pm when I added it to the wiki. However it actually ended up with John Connell, John Johnston, Kenneth Mclaughlin and others talking about some of the problems of ICT in the classroom. In particular two issues were prominent. Glow is not yet completely fit for purpose and RM has a very bureaucratic procedure for taking out the wrinkles. If Glow is a test bed for RM as I personally suspect then they should be very responsive to feedback from teachers and pupils. And blocking software such as Websense should be controlled at least at school level or ideally by individual teachers. Why? Because if pupils are going to search the internet in any meaningful manner they will come across sites which do need to be opened immediately.
Answers From the Crowd
As an alternative to being lead in conversation by a more knowing other, participants can post a topic or question here which will be the focus of twitter thread. At an appropriate time in the evening the focus of each thread could be presented in either a twitterfall or twazzup presentation. This idea would allow the lurkers to contribute to the event without the need to stand up and present.

For anyone presenting, or taking the lead in a learning conversation, a Delicious account has been set up here so that you can bookmark any links you will be referring to. Username is TeachMeetSLF and the password is 2009edition - this will allow participants to access your links prior, during or after TMSLF09 even if you are not chosen to present. If you add your surname as a tag, it will make finding your links that much easier.

TeachEat Venue
The Koh-I-Noor: Indian resaurant closer to town centre (Charing Cross). They do a superb Indian buffet and should be able to cope with our numbers.
The votes were cast at the TeachEat TwtPoll and with more than half the potential diners voting, the Koh-I-Noor was the clear winner!
How to get there
For Sat Nav users, the postcode for the Koh-I-Noor is G3 7DL. However, the nearest parking is likely to be Berkley Street G3 7DW (or there abouts). See map below:
You may be able to use this route to fly through the journey from the BBC to the Koh-i-Noor in Google Earth. Interestingly, the route planner in Google Earth knows about the Squinty Bridge but images in Google Earth don't! It therefore looks like you are driving through the Clyde at one point but there is a bridge ther... honest!

I'm wondering - there are quite a few more 'lurkers' than 'speakers', and as it's a pre-requisite that one speaks about classroom experience I'm kind of ruled out at the moment.
How would people feel about a 'pledge'? Those that lurk would take away an idea that they would pledge to try out in class (or their line of work in education), and report back online (anywhere) about how it went/is going?
At the first Teachmeet (that @mvass recently reminded me about in her blogpost and prezi) I made a pledge to get 118 people to create a blog - I failed, but loved the challenge!

Can't seem to find the 'reserve' list but willing to take on a 'pledge' if I can wing it as another 'enthusiastic lurker'. :-)
