What is TeachMeet?

Learn something new, be amazed, amused and enthused. This is an informal gathering of those curious about teaching and learning in the outdoors. Anyone can share great ideas they've trialled, ask important questions or simply sign up to take part in the practical sessions. Education professionals from all sectors are welcome to take part.

The main part of TeachMeet is the campfire philosophy -  each of us hearing stories about learning from the other participants. This is not an event to present about a product or theory - this is a chance for teachers from all types of establishments to hear ideas from each other about how to take learning and teaching BEYOND the classroom .

Due to the theme of this TeachMeet and the nature of some of the activities, a number of the traditional TeachMeet structures will need to be altered, but the core values remain the same - real narratives of practice that make a difference. It is about being engaged and inspired by our immediate colleagues and a whole bucket load of networking to boot!

What?

A provisional programme has been put together for the event, although this may change in the lead up to the event.

Day 1 - Friday 27th May

1800-2000 (Joe Hall Chalet, campsites as advised)

Participants arrive and set up camp/settle in (and gather firewood!!!)

2000-2200 (Campfire Circle)
TMBeyond campfire. Weather permitting, this will be an actual campfire using the campsite's campfire circle. As well as giving all participants a chance to introduce themselves to the group (perhaps even to sing songs or perform 'stunts'), there will be 'traditional' TeachMeet 7 minute or 2 minute presentations and a discussion bag too, with subjects provided by participants in advance and drawn randomly to generate discussion.

2200 (Joe Hall Chalet)
Soup & stovies followed by social time.

Possible stargazing session with Dave Chalton (Royal Observatory of Edinburgh/Dark Sky Scotland)

Day 2 - Saturday 28th May

0800-1000
Showers, breakfast (cereal & toast provided, cooking facilities available) and set-up time for presenters.

1000-1030 (Joe Hall Chalet)
Welcome for participants/day visitors. Discussion of arrangements and sign up for workshops - Was thinking dependant on numbers we could have between 2 and 4 different workshops repeated in 2 slots for the morning then a different set of wokshops from different presenters repeated over 2 slots in the afternoon. This would allow everyone a chance to get to attend at least 2 and up to 4 workshops.

1030-1130 (various locations)
Morning workshop slot 1

1130-1230 (various locations)
Morning workshop slot 2

1230-1315 (Joe Hall Chalet)
Lunch - soup & sandwiches available for participants to make for themselves.

1315-1415 (various locations)
Afternoon workshop slot 1

1415-1515 (various locations)
Afternoon workshop slot 2

1515-1530 (Joe Hall Chalet)
Thanks & goodbyes

1530->
Depart camp

How?

Indoor accommodation for up to 19 people is available in the Joe Hall Chalet. Camping will be available for those who wish to camp. Campfire presentations & Discussion topics

Everyone will be expected to make a contribution during the campfire, even if it is only to introduce themselves or take part in a group discussion. Others may wish to make a presentation to the group (see below)

Presentations

  • You can use whatever presentation format you want, but remember we are going to be outside with no tech support and it is likely to be getting dark.
  • Nano- and micro- presentations have been squashed together for this event, so your presentation should run between two and seven minutes.
  • Presentations should be about real activities or experiences, which are relevant and applicable by others
  • No sales pitches!

Add your name and what you may talk about below.

  1. Iain Hallahan - Introducing the John Muir Award
  2. Alan Parkinson (GeoBlogs) - to be confirmed
  3. please continue

As the campfire draws to a close, there will be a Dark Sky Scotland mini-workshop, with the possibility of an extended stargazing session afterwards with Dave Chalton from the Royal Observatory of Edinburgh should there be enough interest and favourable conditions.

Discussions

  • Rather than presenting, you might have a topic you want discussed or a question you would like to ask. Add it below, and it'll go in the discussion bag, from which items will be selected at random.

Put it in the bag!

  1. Too scared to go outside - are we becoming too risk-averse?
  2. Everyone share one great outdoor learning idea/experience
  3. "I can't do outdoor learning because....."
  4. Outdoor learning and pupils with learning difficulties or behavioural issues
  5. Hi-tech outdoors
  6. Low tech outdoors
  7. Who should pay for outdoor ed?
  8. Please continue
