ASE Science TeachMeet

4.30pm - 6.15pm Wednesday 24th April 2013

Thinktank Science Museum, Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham B4 7XG

It is an informal and enjoyable gathering of those curious about teaching and learning. Anyone can share great ideas they've trialled in their classrooms, a teaching resource they love, a great website, a classroom activity - whatever you like! You can ask questions or simply turn up to soak up all the great ideas and enthusiasm.  It is about being engaged and inspired by our immediate colleagues and gaining a lot of of networking to boot! There will also be a 15 minute presentation by Professor Anthony Hilton Head of Biology and Biomedical Science at Aston University.

Prof. Hilton's bio:

Following a PhD in microbiology from the University of Birmingham, Professor Hilton remained at the University as a lecturer in the Institute of Public & Environmental Health for five years before moving to Aston University in 2000.  At Aston, Anthony has continued to pursue his research interest in the molecular epidemiology of foodborne pathogens and other important clinical bacteria including MRSA and Clostridium difficile.  He was appointed as Senior Lecturer and Director of Biology / Biomedical Sciences in 2005 and promoted to Reader and Head of Department in 2009.  He has served as the Honorary General Secretary of the Society for Applied Microbiology and held several journal editorial positions.

Through his work with the media, Professor Hilton is a regular contributor to print and broadcast articles in the field of microbiology.  He featured in an eight part BBC Three series, ‘Grime Scene Investigation’ taking a mobile laboratory to visit members of the public in their homes and reveal the microbial world living around them, and more recently on The One Show.  He leads a two day microbiology road-show taking practical microbiology into schools both in the UK and internationally and is always keen to engage the public and younger students in microbiology.

Professor Antony Hilton  wants to share this link with our delegates.  It’s a link to a page of teaching resources for microbiology in schools we’ve developed.

What can you do?

You can just come along and be a member of the audience if you like, you can give a two minute nano-presentation on one of your favourite science teaching ideas, or you can give a seven minute micro-presentation on an aspect of classroom science teaching. You don't have to be an ASE member, but if you're not, we might try to persuade you to join!

Telling Others

Please tell other science teachers about the event. If you've been to a TeachMeet before, aim to bring along someone who hasn't.
