What is TeachMeet

Learn something new, be amazed, amused and enthused. TeachMeet is an informal gathering of those curious about learning and teaching. Anyone can share great ideas they've trialled in their classrooms, ask important questions or simply sign up to take part in learning conversations.

Hear Dughall answer the question: What is a TeachMeet?

Tim and Moby from BrainPop explain about TeachMeet in this video.

What can you do?

You can come along to listen, contribute, chat, meet new people, take part in a workshop/round table discussion, give a seven minute talk, or two minute nano presentation.

  • Your setup is part of the time limit
  • Tell us about something you have done or something you saw while teaching (no sales pitches
  • No laptops - only tablets devices! {This rule is more of a guideline really. Exceptions can be made if you make a good case!}

Table 3

Multicoloured App Swap - What apps are in use in classrooms? Share top tips or listen and learn.

Notes from Discussion via @katiebarrowman (links & additions added via @drewburrett):

Some authorities against connecting mobile devices to the network. Could use  Edmodo etc. to connect devices via cloud.

North Lanarkshire P6 teacher (Nicola Rae) has 1:1 devices and kids can take devices home.

They use Puppet Pals for numeracy. Popplet for mind mapping. Comic life. Using dropbox. Saves paper. Spelling city App for literacy. Also used Minecraft for technology - great for collaborative work.

Kids signed a contract to  allow them to use at home. Parents also signed the contract.

Could use iPads all the time but NL pilot use them 50% of the time. Even for use as a dictionary. Used for a year and a half. Covers personalisation and choice for CFE. e.g. making a rap to present topic learning in Garage BandPuppet Pals etc.

Negatives - some become very reliant, e.g. don't put their own capitals and full stops in, allowing device to autocorrect.

Kids and teacher use a .me account. Tend to email rather than dropbox because parents looking at other kids' work!

Edmodo - now had safe harbour accreditation.

Explain Everything app - mind mapping, recording, integrating other docs. Good for essay feedback. Also pupils giving their own feedback to their own work.

What about paying for apps? Does it lead to inequalities for pupils who can't afford 'best' apps? It is possible to have more than one itunes account on an iOS device.

Could BYOD (bring your own device) be unfair on teachers? Too difficult to manage?  Lots of good reasons to not byod, see Fraser Spiers.

Socrative - quizzes and assessing - versions for staff and pupils.

Could also use math v zombies for numeracy.

Table 4

Hands on - borrow a tablet and see what all the fuss is about.

Picking up on the small steps approach, we started with simple ideas that could easily be incorporated into existing practice. Taking a picture of a pupils work and sharing with Apple TV. There was a music teacher in the group, so while some played with Photobooth, we looked at OnSong with a music teacher: downloading a song, transposing it to another key and looking at the chord diagrams for a variety of instruments. The session finished looking at iBooks: downloaded a free book (Pride and Prejudice); defining words, searching for text; highlighting text; making notes; and emailing notes and highlights.

Webcast

For those who can't make it in person, the TeachMeet will be streamed live on YouTube via Google Hangouts on Air.

Twitter

Those tweeting about or from TeachMeet Tablet are encouraged to use the hashtag: #TMTablet

See what's being said about TeachMeet Tablet right now on Twitter by clicking here (on flash enabled devices)

or here for devices that aren't flash enabled (you know what fruit I'm talking about!)

TeachEat

More typically, after a TeachMeet a number of participants go out for dinner.  Everyone is welcome, and for many it is as important a part of the evening as the Teachmeet.

It is expected that each person will pay for their own meal and drinks as it is unlikely that sponsorship will cover this cost.

The venue is Esquire House, 1487 Great Western Road, Glasgow, G12 0AU. Tuesday is steak night, and they are offering a steak dinner including a drink for £7.99. Other deals, including vegitarian options, are available, e.g. a burger meal including a drink for £5.19.

Hi, I won't be able to make the meeting so how does the web link work? It just says "details to follow." Will it be recorded? Put on Glow? Joanne Spence, Garlieston Primary School, Dumfries and Galloway.
